Sam Davyson >> Site >> About This Site
This site is run by a single person. Me, Sam Davyson. It covers some of my interests and provides some resources including hosting some of my projects. I hope that you like it, if you have any questions, comments, criticisms etc. then please fill in the feedback form, you can see what other people are saying here. Some common site-related questions are dealt with below.
Who made all this nonsense?
davyson.com, sam.davyson.com and all lower sub-domains and sites were created and are now maintained by Sam Davyson. The site is still evolving and has gone through multiple stages so far, with loads of pages still to be made. I try to maintain high page quality and a general standard layout, as well as finding somewhere logical for everything to fit in.
There is some content that is not created by Sam Davyson. This is pretty rare and it is normally something I am hosting for a friend. These items are clearly marked with the relevant licence. The licence (see below) for all other items does not necessarily apply to these pieces of work.
Why 153 then?
153 is a very unusual number. It is the sum of the cubes of its digits. That is 153 = 13 + 53 + 33. It is not the only number for which this applies, but it is one of the few. This is not why it is 153rd.com though. It is called 153rd.com as I was kindly given this hosting space by FunkgerM. 153rd.com is his domain.
Update: The site is no longer hosted in this way. It is now on Dreamhost. Read more about the change on the Update Blog.
Which editor do you use?
All of the pages that you see on sam.davyson.com were written by hand using a NotePad type application. I actually use EditPad Pro which is like NotePad but much better made. It does not however have a WYSIWYG interface or anyway of automatically generating code. I use HTML and CSS with some JavaScript implementations to produce the pages. Using this package makes spell checking difficult, so there are spelling errors all over the shop. If you spot one you might want to let me know.
Update: I am now also using my own editor to create and edit pages. It is working well so far, and if there is a feature that I want... I just build it.
Is it copyrighted?
No, it isn't. All of the content on this site (unless clearly otherwise stated) is under a Creative Commons Licence. Basically it gives the right to anyone to use, modify, redistribute, sell, or make profits from the content on this site if the original author of the work (Sam Davyson) is asserted and you provide users of your products with exactly the same licence for your work as the one that I have presented here. This is a summary. The official licence can be found here.
Who hosts your site?
The site is totally hosted by Dreamhost. That is sam.davyson.com, davyson.com and all other associated domains and email addresses. They will be hosts until 27th January 2007, at least. Know a better host? Let me know.
Who pays for it all then?
The site used to run on a very strict budget of exactly zero. However to upgrade the site experience for everyone and to broaden the possibilities of what could be done on the site I now pay for hosting. In order to help with the payments I run small advertisements in the most popular part of my website, Aluminium. The advertisements do not generate much income and all funds raised are recycled into development.
Lets put it this way, if I were to employ myself rather than doing the site as a hobby I would have long since quit the job.
